A while back I posted about using ‘/target arena1′ and ‘/focus arena1′ macros for easily swapping between arena1/arena2/arena3 targets. I still use this system – pressing shift+F2 to change my focus to the other team’s second player is so much easier than any other targeting method I’ve tried. The only problem is that this method takes up six actionbar buttons in total (or ten if you use this system for 5v5). That’s not too horrible if you’re using Bartender or other bar addons, but it can be a bit restrictive if you’re using a standard UI!

After a bit of playing around, I’ve combined both the targeting and focusing into a single macro for each arena target. I’m sure I had a smoother way of doing this before, but this seems to work just fine. If anyone has a less messy way of writing the macro, let me know please and I’ll update it.

/focus [mod:shift,@arena1][] %f
/target [nomod,@arena1][] %t

The above macro will target arena1 by default – holding shift will change your focus to arena1. The modifier can be changed from shift to ctrl (or even alt if you’ve got wierd thumbs).

The problem was, how to reliably switch between them in arenas when I wanted to swap poisons?

I searched around for ages, looking for a way of making three macros that would let me reliably swap. Unfortunately it just doesn’t seem possible, as equipslot/pickupitem macros failed to distinguish between them.

However, there’s an easy way I’d overlooked at first – the ingame equipment manager. This seems to be able to tell the difference between identical weapons; you just need to create sets where you only have the dagger selected for change (so you don’t have to recreate the sets when you upgrade your head etc). Do this for each of the weapons, then you can drag/drop the equipment-set icon from the manager onto your toolbars. Easy!

Last night I lost a 2v2 game with my priest after I had managed to get the jump on the other teams rogue. He reversed the opener onto me through a blind and won the game shortly after. Today I made an alt on Stormscale to quickly speak to him*. We talked briefly about counter-openers and combining buttons/mousebuttons to string together non-GCD abillities.

In the past I’ve been using this macro whenever rogues/paladins opened on me;

/use PVP_TRINKET_NAME
/cast vanish
/cast cheap shot

It’s nice and simple, but not very effective (plus you have to spam it as you’ll probably be facing the wrong way at first). I rarely get the chance to land the cheapshot before I’m either AoE’d or FoK’d out of stealth. What I’ll be experimenting with over the next few days is;

/use PVP_TRINKET_NAME
/cast blind
/cast vanish

Even though it uses your blind immediately, it gives you a very good chance to turn the tables on the attacker, especially if you use it the very second you are opened on. I’ve been experimenting with other combinations of GCD/non-GCD spells but can’t find anything that works as well without the risk of unnecessarily blowing cooldowns that aren’t needed.

Would it be worth adding evasion into this macro? Theoretically if the person you just blinded went on to do the same to you, there’s a chance you’ll dodge their opener. However, if they wait until your Kidney Shot before trinketing, you’ve just lost a third of your evasion time. Personally I’ll give it a miss initially, but I’ll see how it goes in the future.

If you don’t want to use any cooldowns when you are jumped, try and get support from your partner. If their rogue can be CC’d before the end of his cheap shot you should be able to come out of stun naturally. On the other hand, if you find that you’re the one being sheeped/cycloned/hexed when opening on other rogues, try out the addon ‘Spellalerter‘, and be prepared to use Cloak of Shadow if you see any incoming casts on yourself.

* A really nice guy as well, thanks for taking the time out for a quick chat! Hopefully I’ll be trinket/blinding as fast as you one day

Here are two more ways of swapping weapons, so you can benefit from the tactic of swapping to Instant Poison when your target has 5 doses of Deadly Poison on them. It’s also worth making a basic macro to swap your weapons back to your normal Wound/Deadly weapons, incase anything goes wrong in the middle of a fight.

The first is nice and simple yet seems to work remarkably well (thx Tamatar for posting this macro);

/equipslot 16 IP_DAGGER_1
/equipslot 17 IP_DAGGER_2
/equipslot 16 WOUND_DAGGER_1
/equipslot 17 DEADLY_DAGGER_2

Each time you run this macro it equips the pair of daggers you don’t have equipped at that moment. Use it to toggle between
IP/IP and WD/Deadly (replacing IP_DAGGER_1 etc with the names of your daggers).

### EXPERIMENTAL ###

The second one is quite complicated, experimental and needs the Outfitter addon. For the long version/discussion, have a look at this post by Korner on ElitistJerks (thx Camo). It’s meant for PVE, but might be usable in PVP – you will need to experiment with it to find out whether it works for you or not. I’m a bit concerned that this might cause excessive weapon swaps in PVP (Abolish Poison could really mess with your day), so this might need a bit of playing with.

I’ll have a look at making a version of this that swaps your MH when wound is applied/about to run out, but I can’t tell if that would give a DPS boost or not.

You need to create two sets of gear (with just the daggers selected for changing), one with your Wound/Deadly daggers, the other with your IP daggers. Right-click on the IP set and click ’scripts>custom’ – paste in the following code;

– $EVENTS TIMER UNIT_COMBAT
local dp_name=”Deadly Poison IX”
local switch_time = 5
if UnitAffectingCombat(“player”) then
for i=1,40 do
local n,_,_,s,_,_,x,c,_=UnitDebuff(“target”,i);
if n==dp_name and c==”player” then
equip = not ( x-GetTime() > switch_time and s == 5 )
end
end
else
equip = false
end

Replace “Deadly Poison IX” with the localised name of the poison, and replace the local_switch_time number with the number of seconds before the poison stack wears off before you swap back to your Wound/Deadly daggers. If all goes well, your daggers will be automatically swapped once you get 5 stacks of DP, then swap back.

After mentioning this briefly in a previous post, I thought I’d expand on it a bit more. I really recommend reading the whole article here, the guy really knows his stuff.

I use two versions of his macro, the first of which is a reliable sapper, the second only saps rogues/druids (both are spammable). To setup either of these macros you need four empty slots on your stealth action bar, as this is actually three macros in one. SAP1 can go anywhere on the bar (I have it in slot 2) but SAP2 MUST be put on slot 10 and SAP3 be put on slot 12. Slot 11 needs to be empty, as Мадкат’s macro actually moves the second macro from slot 10 to slot 11, and back again (too quick for you to see though). Create the three macros as follows;

Spammable sap

First macro (SAP1)

/script if not UnitExists("target") then te=0; else te=1; end; sn="Sap"; fn=IsSpellInRange
/targetenemy [noexists]
/script if te==0 and (fn(sn)==0 or not fn(sn)) then PickupAction(82); PickupAction(83); end
/click ActionButton12

Second macro (SAP2)

/script PickupAction(83); PickupAction(82);
/cleartarget

Third macro (SAP3)

/click ActionButton11
/cast Sap
/cleartarget
/stopmacro [noexists]

Version #2 – spammable rogue and druid sap

This macro will only sap rogues and druids. Only the first macro needs to be changed, SAP2 and SAP3 remain the same.

First macro (SAP1)

/targetenemy [noexists]
/script r=IsSpellInRange("Sap") or 0;_,c=UnitClass("target");if(not UnitExists("target") and r==0 or not(c=="ROGUE" or c==DRUID)) then PickupAction(82);PickupAction(83);end
/click ActionButton12

The advantage of the second example is that you can use the macro close to non-stealthed enemies without giving your position away by sapping them. Hats off to Мадкат for coming up with this system of reliable sapping.

I’ve finally gotten around to clearing out my macros and looking into some new ones – here are some that I use often when PVPing.

Sap Macro

There are two you can use, the first is primitive and simple. The idea is to spam this while jumping/spinning and hope you get lucky and catch yourself a rogue;

/cleartarget
/targetenemy
/cast Sap

The second, heh well the seconds needs a lot of setting up – credit goes to Мадкат, the full post can be found here on arenajunkies.com. There are five pages to read through that will explain what you need to do.

Gouge Macro

This will gouge your target then try to bandage yourself – remember to stop moving before you press it else you will get the first-aid debuff without benefiting from the bandage.

/cast Gouge
/stopcasting
/use [target=player] Heavy Frostweave Bandage

The next macro can come in useful against classes trying to kite you. I often spam gouge when running at people, and this will try to put you into stealth if you drop out of combat. You can either have this on your first toolbar and make sure that the stealth bar which replaces it has cheap shot bound to the same location as this macro, or add “/cast [stealth] Cheap Shot” onto the end of it.

#showtooltip gouge
/cast [combat,nostealth] Gouge
/cast [nocombat,nostealth] Stealth

Vanish Macro

To start with, this one makes vanish a little more reliable and less likely to break immediately (though it probably will anyways).

/stopattack
/cast Vanish

The next is a macro I’m playing with at the moment, ideally I want a button I can mash when a rogue jumps me. “/use 14″ means use itemslot 14, which is the lower of the trinkets (13 is the top). This macro also stops you accidentally triggering your trinket when you’re not in combat, but that’s not an amazingly useful feature (even though my 2v2 partner managed to do just that last night ). Replace TRINKETNAME with whichever PVP trinket you use to break CC.

#showtooltip TRINKETNAME or if you’re human use #showtooltip Every Man for Himself(Racial)
/stopattack
/use [combat] 14 or if you’re human, use /cast Every Man for Himself(Racial)
/cast [nostealth] vanish
/cast [stealth] cheap shot

The trick is to spam the button while trying to spin around to face your target. It leaves you open to a blind, so make sure your partner keeps the rogue in combat if this happens (tbh that’s one of the most important part of fighting a rogue, always always keep him in combat).

Preparation Macro

Sometimes (probably when fighting double DPS teams) you’ll need to use vanish twice to stay alive, possibly without even having the chance to think about doing any damage. If you use preparation straight away you lose out on a lot of cooldowns, but in those mad-panicked moments, it’s hard to squeeze in a sprint/evasion/coldblood before you prep-vanish to save yourself. Use this macro instead of ‘/cast preparation’ and you will burn everything you can before preparation takes effect.

#showtooltip preparation
/cast Cold Blood
/cast [nostealth] Evasion
/cast Sprint
/cast Preparation

Mutilate/Sinister Strike Macro

Using this macro takes away an element of control over trinkets and on use effects (you’ll be unable to save rocket gloves/GLG for when your target is critically low), but it does ensure you’ll get maximum dps out of them as they will always be on cooldown whenever you are in combat. It also cuts down on those annoying ‘fooooom’ noises and error messages you get when trying to perform an action that is on cooldown or lacking energy, which tbh drive me crazy. This addon can be modified to suit your needs – obviously you can swap mutilate out for whichever button you’re spamming in combat. The example below will activate glove enchant/top trinket whenever they are off cooldown.

/run SetCVar(”Sound_EnableSFX”,”0″)
/use 10
/use 13
/cast Mutilate
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
/run SetCVar(”Sound_EnableSFX”,”1″)
/startattack

With the /use command, the number that follows corresponds to the following item slots;

1 = head
2 = neck
3 = shoulder
4 = shirt
5 = chest
6 = belt
7 = legs
8 = feet
9 = wrist
10 = gloves
11 = finger 1
12 = finger 2
13 = trinket 1 (top)
14 = trinket 2 (bottom)
15 = back
16 = main hand
17 = off hand
18 = ranged
19 = tabard

Using /script UIErrorsFrame:Clear() clears error messages, but also clears quest tracking messages (such as 6/10 mobs killed etc).

UPDATE*
I hadn’t noticed but /castrandom can no longer be used to cast unavailable spells (such as “/castrandom mutilate, ghostly strike”) so anybody using castrandom in this manner needs to rethink their macro.

In 3.2 Blizzard has changed the functionality of /castrandom and /userandom. They now pick an ability the first time they are pressed, and will not select a new ability until that one has been cast successfully. Cancelling the cast, or any other interrupt will not cause a new ability to be selected! This also means that if the chosen ability is impossible to cast for whatever reason (for example: typo, not available in current spec), the macro will get stuck permanently! Note that this change, while not listed in the patch notes, is indeed an intended change and not a bug!
